Strong Blak / Soft White, 2025
Fine Art Print on Hahnemühle Paper — Framed
62cm x 38cm
Strong Blak / Soft White is both a tongue-in-cheek play on words and a sharp reflection on where we stand as a nation. On the surface it nods to something as everyday as breakfast — coffee and bread — yet beneath that simplicity sits a critique of Australia’s enduring black and white divide.
As a Tasmanian Aboriginal man, I live within this tension every day. To be strong blak is to stand rooted in culture, resilient against erasure, and unshaken by the weight of history. To be confronted with soft white is to witness fragility hardened into hostility through the unsettling rise of those who seek to intimidate, divide, and drown out the calls for justice.
The closeness of the text and background colours is deliberate: it forces the viewer to really look, to focus in, to confront what is often avoided. Conversations about race can be uncomfortable, but it is within that discomfort that truth begins to stir.
This work takes power back through humour and wordplay. It holds a mirror to the country’s current affairs, echoing global struggles for equity and justice, while grounding itself firmly in the local context of being Aboriginal in modern-day Australia.
In solidarity, 20% of all sales will be donated to Camp Sovereignty in Naarm/Melbourne, in response to the shocking attack our nation recently witnessed. An act that reminds us all of the realities of being Strong Blak against the Soft White.
The message is simple but unflinching: the struggle continues, but so does our strength. Printed in a limited edition of 25 on Hahnemühle fine art paper and framed locally, this piece asks the viewer not just to look, but to see.
The Strong Blak / Soft White Collectors Edition includes:
Museum-Grade Archival Prints, Framed by Full Gamut
Certificate of Authenticity
Artist Interpretation
Strong Blak / Soft White Postcards (A6)
Thank-you Card
Proof of donation to Camp Sovereignty will be shared once the edition has sold in full.
