A sculptural memorial of stones carrying grief, memory, and return along the Midland Highway.
Presented as part of HOME|LAND, a group exhibition exploring relationships to land and home, Midland Mourning is a sculptural work created from farm-collected stones, monumental in form, yet subtle in message. The piece references my regular travel along the Midland Highway, a route steeped in both colonial violence and personal reflection. The rocks, once tools, became symbols of memory, grief, and return, eventually placed back into the landscape after the exhibition closed.
The exhibition included artwork by Georgia Lucy, Caleb Nichols-Mansell, Flo Robinson, Nunami Sculthorpe-Green, Priya Vunaki and Richie Cuskelly and was curated by Alex Hullah. You can read the review of the exhibition by Jade Irvin for ArtsHub.
